Back to today’s post!

I was recently lucky enough to be sent an amazing little package from Essence (you can find my first impressions of it here). I have to admit, Essence isn’t a brand I had played around with much before now. If you are like me, then you might not know that Essence is a super affordable brand that first came about way back in 2001. They believe in high quality makeup that doesn’t cost their customers an arm and a leg. Towards the end of 2020, Essence has launched a brand new range, and within it we find the new Pretty Natural Hydrating Foundation. That’s what today’s post is going to be all about! If you want to know what my thoughts are on the Essence Pretty Natural Hydrating Foundation, then keep on reading.

*This product was generously sent to me for free. I am under no obligation to review this product, nor am I being paid to promote it. All thoughts are my own.*

Let’s start off with the packaging. This foundation is housed in a squeezy tube (is that the scientific name for it? It is now!). It isn’t the most beautiful packaging I have ever seen, but It does the job. Now I have to admit, this is not my favourite type of packaging simply because of how messy it can get. I personally prefer a pump bottle, but it is something that I am willing to see past. There is 30mL of product within the tube. This foundation retails for $10 AUD on Priceline. On the Priceline website, the shade range is extremely abysmal, they only stock 8 ‘light’ shades. But on the Essence website (we can’t buy from their website here in Australia, but I am sure you could find it somewhere else online), there are 31 shades available. I think this is amazing for an affordable brand.

Now let’s talk about the formula. Essence claims that this hydrating foundation will give you a medium coverage finish, it will feel weightless and it will last up to 24 hours. Why you would want to wear foundation for that long I will never understand, but I guess it is an impressive claim. The formula is also cruelty free, vegan, gluten free and paraben free. It also contains beautiful ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera. Hyaluronic acid is a super-hydrator and it helps with plumping the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and replenishing cell moisture. Aloe vera is a well known skin smoother that helps to calm irritation, cools the skin and promotes the healing of breakouts. What amazing ingredients for an affordable brand!

They say that after priming and moisturising, you can either blend the foundation out using a sponge, brush or your fingers. I prefer to blend out with a brush as I do like the finish of that so much more, and I find it way easier to work with. I was sent the shade 050 Neutral Champagne, and this shade works best for me when I have a slight tan to my skin.

So what are my thoughts on this foundation and are the claims true? Well, it is definitely a lightweight foundation and it really did make my skin look natural and even. While this is a hydrating foundation, I found that it wasn’t hydrating enough to wow me. It did add some slight moisture to my skin, and it dried down to a slightly matte finish. I would say that the coverage is light to medium, but buildable. I have combination skin, leaning more on the oily side. I can appreciate when a foundation is slightly matte on me, as it tends to last longer throughout the day. This could be an issue for others. What I absolutely love about it is how it is barely detectable on the skin! I felt like I was wearing nothing at all (say that in Flanders voice).

Overall, I am actually super impressed with this foundation! I love how affordable it is, and I already want to purchase a lighter shade to wear when I don’t have any fake tan on. I would definitely recommend this foundation to anyone who has skin similar to mine (combination, slightly oily). I can’t speak for those with dry skin, as I don’t know how it would wear on that skin type.

Have you tried this foundation? Are there any others you think I need to try? Make sure you leave me a comment and let me know 🙂

That’s all for now Beauties!

  1. I´ve tried some Essence products in the past and I´ve always been very impressed by their performance considering how affordable they are. I haven´t tried this foundation yet, but it looks like another great product from the brand. I like the luminous matte and natural-looking finish it gives plus being available in so many shades, I´m sure I´ll find my skin tone match. Thank you so much for sharing!

      1. I love Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour lipsticks, they really give an amazing colour pay off with a great creamy texture and also Essence nail polishes, whfich are pretty good considering how affordable they are.
